You’ve probably heard of The Baseballs already. If you have, you’ve had one of two reactions. One you’ll think they’re brilliant, Youtube the fuck out of them and then get bored when you’ve heard their stuff so much that you’re hearing them in your sleep. Or two, you just thought it was gimmicky shite.
If you haven’t heard of them already, and this is the first you have done, then expect one of the above out comes.
The Baseballs set themselves up in Berlin in 2007 and released their debut album “Strike” in 2009. Since then they’ve had success all over Europe, going top twenty in 6 countries. Not a bad feat in today’s music world.
So what sets them apart?
Well the reason I said they could be viewed as gimmicky shite is because they perform cover versions of modern day pop hits in the form of 50′s Rock n Roll.
Irish radio have started to play the odd song by The Baseballs, and while we’re a little behind in catching on to their trend, I doubt it’ll last. Having said that, it’s good for a change of the other shite that’s on the airwaves these days, if even for a short while.
They’ll be more known for their cover versions of Rhianna’s Umbrella and Katy Perry’s Hot and Cold, here they are here.

And just for good measure, Lady Gaga’s Pokerface
I can’t help but think that they’d do much better with some original material. After all, if they can turn a modern song into a 50′s ditty, they could surely do that with the help of a modern songwriter. That’s assuming they can’t write songs themselves.
They might also have a longer staying power if they didn’t cover songs that were already in high rotation on radio around the world.
Maybe I’m being unfair, but I can’t see these lads lasting any longer than their current album tour. Having said that, here’s a live performance of their version of Green Day’s Basket Case. I suppose after a few beers, they might be a bit of craic.

What’s your verdict?

I smell a fish.
They set themselves up in Berlin, did they now?
They have all the contrived and questionable qualities of their Teutonic predecessors, Boney M, Milli Vanilli, The Smurfs etc.
At least Kraftwerk were trying to be funny.
I also smell like a fish.
