Football Tennis Ireland

Ladies, they're receiving applications for team cheerleaders now!

One week on since posting for the first time about our Football Tennis adventure and boy have things started happening. Newspaper articles, radio interviews, and now interest from a television station have really made this story snowball into something we never thought it would be.

I posted the original piece last Wednesday on this here humble site and to our surprise it was quickly picked up by The Irish Examiner the next day. After an over-the-phone interview with the sports editor of The Examiner that Thursday evening he had it ready for us to pick up on Friday morning and have a good aul laugh at.

And that we did.

We didn’t even think the original email would get a reply, never mind lead to being published in a national newspaper.

But it was not all smiles and lollipops.

Friday morning also brought some bad news. Jamie, our team captain, had gotten an email from the president of FIFTA telling us that the Turkish organisers had changed the dates from the 25th November to the 18th December. This caused us some distress at first, thinking it would cost us hundreds of euro to change the flights but after ringing customer services they reassured us it would only cost €50 each to change the dates.

“Phew! Not too bad.”

So we changed the flights and re-read the article and had a good aul laugh again.

But then Jamie got another email telling us that the Turkish organisers had changed the dates again to the 8th December!

Laughing over this was beginning to look worrying. It didn’t seem like the most professional set up and we were beginning to wonder what we had gotten ourselves into but the president of FIFTA reassured us;

“It is a fact we have to face”, came his slightly Bond-bad-guy sounding reply.

Our FIFTA president friend was on our side and was pretty angry at the big bad Turkish organisers but it seems to have all calmed down now.

We had to ring Turkish Airlines again though who are pretty terrible at understanding English and who seemed suspicious of us changing our flights so we have to go to Dublin airport and pay the €50 each before the end of this month which is pretty annoying.

But bad guys and good guys aside the exposure from the Irish Examiner made it easier to get the ball rolling and we managed to get an interview with Mid West Radio on Sunday evening.

Things were beginning to happen!

The next day we got a reply email from TV3 and Morning AM wanting to come to our training session on Friday.

As well as that, just yesterday (Tuesday), we were featured in The Western People with our first team photo!

And we were also interviewed and photographed by the Sunday World yesterday and will be appearing in it this Sunday!

So its not all that easy being an international athlete. Dealing with the press and all the fans can be tough. Sometimes I just want people to get to know the real me, ya know.

Not.

This has been some laugh and its nowhere near over yet. Be sure to keep an eye on here for more updates on our international adventure as we continue to hunt for more exposure to hopefully one day get some sponsorship.

These days, as our government humiliates us, it’s nice to have a reason to laugh.

P.S.

We are still looking for sponsorship! We have no tracksuits and really need them for the competition. So please if there is anyone out there who would like to see their business advertised all over the world and in Ireland now’s your chance!
