I don’t know about all of you, but when I see the word “light” after a name of a beer or food, I automatically think “weak tasting” or “shit”. Just think about all of the “light” (or as they sometimes wackily spell it “lite”) products that fall into those categories; Budweiser, Philadelphia, Coors and even the mighty King Crisp has a light version. All shit!
So it was with much trepidation that I attended the Corona Light launch on Monday night in The Church bar in Dublin. I
am a huge fan of Corona. I would go so far as to say it’s probably my favourite bottled beer. Would this Light version be able to live up to it’s predecessor’s lofty standards?
The bottle itself is very much like the original Corona bottle, and has the same distinctive colouring and font. It is also slightly larger than most other bottled beer. Coming in at 355ml instead of 330ml, it’s hardly a massive difference, but nevertheless, you are getting more bang for your buck.
But enough about the aesthetics, what does it taste like?
You’ll be pleased to know that Corona Light manages to avoid becoming another brand ruined by the “light” suffix. It is just as refreshing, just as tasty and just as thirst quenching as ever. Corona (and especially Corona Light now) is a brand who manages to target both the male and female audiences equally. The fact that a bottle of Corona Light is under 100 calories, 0% fat and 5 grams of carbohydrates might mean nothing to men, but you can be sure that women all over the country will have their WeightWatchers points calculators out and salivating from the groin at how many they can have on a night out without ‘going over their limit!”
Most drink reviews hark on about the specifics of the subtleties of the flavours on the palatte. I’m going to simply say that Corona Light tastes like a beer. Not a light beer. A Beer. That’s the best compliment you could pay to a low calorie drink.
As expected, Corona Light is served with the trademark lime wedge in the top of the bottle. I can’t explain why, but it does improve the taste. The lime compliments the flavours and adds an extra crispness to it. It would be easy to dismiss this as just being the lime overwhelming the taste of the beer but it’s not that. I have tried a lime wedge with various different beers over the years and none come close to the combination of Corona (and now, Corona Light) with a lime wedge.
It’s an unusual trait for a bottled drink to be popular with both men and women. I know some men who wouldn’t be caught dead drinking West Coast Cooler, Ritz or even Coors Light, but I don’t see that being a problem for Corona Light. It’s already well established in America. It has been on the go since 1989 and is their number 1 imported light beer. How it has taken so long to be introduced to the European market is anybody’s guess, especially considering how weight conscious the world has become.
I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this beer. If you are a Corona drinker, you will barely notice the difference; if you drink a light beer as part of a calorie controlled diet, this is the absolute best on the market; and if you simply don’t like Corona, then I’m afraid this really offers nothing to alter your opinion. And your opinion is wrong. And you are probably a dickhead. And so’s your ma!
Corona Light hasn’t pushed any boundaries with their new drink, but instead have offered a low calorie option of a great beer without sacrificing the taste.
Pros: Looks like Corona, Tastes Like Corona, Low in Carbs and stuff, not a typical girly “light drink”
Cons: If you don’t like Corona, you won’t like this
If this drink was a girl it would be: That girl that you used to go out with when you were younger that you really liked but was a little bit of a chubster, but when you accidentally bump into her on a night out you see that she’s lost weight and she looks amazing………. or…. Salma Hayek – ‘cos she’s Mexican.
